Storm Petrel Studies
FIBO has a long history of undertaking research and of helping visiting scientists. Over the last three years, we’ve been able to support three MSc students with specific projects relating to the aims of the Fair Isle Demonstration and Research MPA working in partnership with SNH. Following the fire, its obviously been challenging to provide accommodation for visiting scientists and students but we felt it was crucial that research work continued. We were fortunate to have the support of the National Trust for Scotland and the Fair Isle Community which enabled us to use the Puffinn. This year's student, Helen Gunton, spent a month on the island this summer, as part of her masters degree in marine environmental management at the University of York. She was studying the Storm Petrel as part of a project supported by SNH, in partnership with the RSPB and FIBO.
